SHAKESPEARE’S LESSONS FOR LEADERSHIP

Shakespeare’s plays tell the stories of some of history’s greatest leaders, capturing their triumphs (and, occasionally, their failures). In language unmatched by the writers who came before and after him, he portrays how to inspire people and how to make the most difficult of decisions. It may come as no surprise, then, that his plays have inspired a range of books on business leadership (Shakespeare in Charge: The Bard’s Guide to Leading and Succeeding on the Business Stage, The Bard & Co.: Shakespeare’s Role in Modern Business), and that his greatest speeches are studied by future leaders in top-flight MBA programs.

In our 10-day journey, we’ll view several of his most famous plays both at London’s Globe Theater and in Stratford, where the playwright was born. Talking with actors and directors – and discussing the work amongst ourselves – we’ll derive what lessons Shakespeare’s work offers for today’s leaders. In addition to studying his characters, we’ll also learn about the man himself, a very successful entrepreneur of his day not only in entertainment but in real estate.

Objectives:

  • Engage in guided inquiry about what fuels motivation

  • Explore the power of language and performance by leaders to inspire others

  • Examine questions of ethical decision-making and values through the lens of Shakespeare’s characters
