• At Executive GlobeTREK, a sabbatical is not simply time off—it’s a structured pause with purpose. Rooted in the Hebrew Shabbat (rest), sabbaticals have grown beyond academia into leadership practice. Inspired by DJ DiDonna’s research (The Sabbatical Project), we see them as “real-life breaks” that foster renewal. Executive GlobeTREK elevates this into an immersive leadership and wellness laboratory where travel, culture, and reflection converge.

  • Common categories include Work, Career, Professional, Academic, Mental Health, and Health/Recovery sabbaticals. Executive GlobeTREK integrates these into transformative short-term journeys that strengthen clarity, resilience, and impact.

Understanding Sabbaticals

Sabbatical Program Design & Philosophy

  • Because leadership requires renewal. Executives operate in environments of constant urgency, complexity, and responsibility. Over time, this pace leads to burnout, diminished creativity, and reduced effectiveness. A sabbatical provides the rare opportunity to step away with intention—to reflect, reset, and return with a new perspective.

For leaders, the benefits are both personal and organizational:

    • Clarity & Perspective – Time away allows leaders to see the “big picture,” refine priorities, and return with a sharper sense of vision and purpose.

    • Resilience & Energy – Rest and restoration improve cognitive function, creativity, and problem-solving—key traits for high-stakes decision-making.

    • Strategic Insight – By engaging in symbolic journeys, cultural immersion, and reflective practice, leaders build capacity for systems thinking and long-range strategy.

    • Authenticity & Confidence – Research from Harvard Business Review shows sabbatical-takers return with greater self-clarity and the ability to craft their leadership roles around a renewed sense of authenticity.

    • Organizational Value – Companies benefit directly: Deloitte reports firms with strong leadership development are 1.7x more likely to be top financial performers. Sabbaticals not only support retention and succession but also prevent costly executive turnover.

  • Traditional vacations or conferences fail to deliver the depth leaders need. Sabbaticals combine:

    • Cultural immersion in symbolic locations.

    • Executive coaching & leadership frameworks.

    • Reflective practices tied to renewal and clarity.

    • Seamless white-glove logistics.

This creates travel elevated into transformation—leaders return not just rested but strategically sharper.

  • Most TREKs run 7–12 days. Executive GlobeTREK has designed short-term sabbaticals with the busy executive in mind who likely cannot take longer. Short-term sabbaticals allow for structured in-depth focus on leadership and wellbeing in a global context. Extensions are possible, especially when aligned with employer-sponsored sabbatical leave policies. Each program typically has 6-8 executives allowing for deep discussions, bespoke teamwork, and confidential experiences.

  • Yes. Beyond the Summit Sabbatical Series, Executive GlobeTREK designs custom long-term sabbaticals tailored to company needs.

Who We Serve

Models of Participation: Sponsorship and Independent

  • Most companies Executive GlobeTREK works with sponsor executives to participate in the Summit Sabbatical Series.

Executive GlobeTREK is designed as a corporate partnership model, where the company—not the individual—is the primary client. We work directly with Fortune 1000 organizations and forward-thinking firms that see sabbaticals as part of their talent strategy

    • Burnout is one of the top reasons managers and executives exit roles, costing up to 200% of an annual salary to replace.

    • 36% of the U.S. workforce reports feeling burned out, with senior leaders at especially high risk.

    • A Harvard Business Review study shows that executives who took sabbaticals returned with greater self-clarity, confidence, and authenticity in leadership.

    • Deloitte research confirms companies with strong leadership development are 1.7x more likely to be top financial performers.

By sponsoring their leaders in the Summit Sabbatical Series, companies are investing in retention, renewal, and leadership pipelines. These curated sabbatical experiences function as both a reward and development tool—helping organizations keep high performers, prevent costly turnover, and strengthen executive impact.
